Association of Northern Counties Senior Cup 23 January 2010

West Kirby 3 - Kendal County FC 1

West Kirby progressed to the next round of the Northern Counties Senior Cup with a thrilling 3-1 victory over a determined Kendal County at Apex Marine Park on Saturday.

Honors were even in the opening exchanges with Kendal looking dangerous on the break with piercing runs down the left wing that drew the best from the Lee Gibson and the West Kirby defence to keep them out.

As the half progressed West Kirby raised the tempo pressing for an opening and on 31 minutes the pressure paid off as the home team won a penalty and captain Lee Gibson stepped up to break the deadlock with a shot low to the keeper's left. Kendal County held firm to the interval as the teams went in 1-0 to West Kirby at half Time.

Battling for their Cup life Kendal came out in the second half all guns blazing to silence the home crowd with an early goal on 55 minutes to level the tie 1-1.

Forced into raising their game again West Kirby powered forward to enjoy the territory but failed to register the score. Home fans were left biting their nails as their forward’s squandered 4 good chances that should have put the tie out of sight.

Rushing shots and scrambling for the ball when a cool head would have hammered home the advantage left West Kirby locked in a tough Cup battle with Kendal looking more than dangerous on the break.

In his third season as West Kirby Manager John Brett has produced a team of determination, character and skill. The Wirral men were not to be denied as the winning ways instilled in the squad came to the fore with two late goals by Andy Barker and Mikey Burke which broke the hearts of the Westmorland team and their travelling supporters.

Changing the majority of players at half time, three goals in each half were spread amongst Philly Hudson (2), Matty Carlin, Paul Felingham, Mike Docherty and Mark Lake. Sorry Mark the photographer missed your goal.

Action from the pre-season friendly with Airbus.

West Kirby fell behind 1-0 to a dubious linesman's decision after 20 minutes but pulled level via a Chris Barrow goal, before going into the break 2-1 ahead through a JP Stanhope goal direct from a corner kick.

After a number of team changes at half time a goal keeping mistake enabled Airbus to draw level. West Kirby fell behind 2-3 after poor defending but pulled back level 10 minutes from the end after substitute Dean Stewart rose at the far post and headed across goal for Matty Cass to head home. Overall the final resul 3-3 was a fair result in this pre-season friendly.

Chris Barrow's second goal in the pre-season friendly with Bangor.

West Kirby went into their first pre-season friendly after just one training session - and it showed - as Bangor raced into a 3 - 0 lead after 20 minutes, thanks to a series of defensive mistakes. West Kirby slowly came back into the game and Chris Barrow scored with a looping header just before half time to go into the break 3-1 down.

After John Brett’s half time talk West Kirby came out for the second half playing much more like themselves and began take the play much more into the Bangor half, winning a penalty which Philly Hudson converted. Bangor broke away and scored to make it 4-2 but West Kirby began to assert themselves, scoring again through another Chris Barrow header and Bangor were on the back foot as the game drew an end.

Wirral Senior Cup Final
Heswall 0 - West kirby 1

Luck favoured West Kirby in this hard fought Wirral Senior Cup Final. It is fair to say that Heswall had the majority of possession but couldn't convert their few chances, including a scrambled clearance off the goal line by the West Kirby defence. Goalless at half time, West Kirby played better after the break and fortune favoured their attacking ambition via an own goal from a deflected Matty Cass shot.
